Wisconsin Teacher Standard #1:
"The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful to students."
Rationale:
This unit plan was created for my “Middle School Teaching” class at Alverno. I was asked to create a unit plan that focused on a social justice issue and my area of study, English. The theme of this plan is "Prejudice and Racism: Racial and Religious". The unit plan I created focuses on the book Witness by Karen Hesse. It is told in a 5-verse poetic form and deals with the issues of prejudice and racism. Students learn about two girls, one being Jewish and the other being African American, in a small town in New Hampshire where the KKK has taken over the town. The unit plan includes contextual factors, such as grade level, skills to be covered, and how students will address the issue of prejudice and racism. Also included is the purpose and rationale for the entire unit. Finally, this unit includes lesson plans, assessments and rubrics. This unit plan demonstrates that I am able to create a unit based on my own content area, while also demonstrating my ability to bring important concepts and meaningful subject matter to students.
This unit plan satisfies the requirements for Wisconsin Teacher 1 because I have demonstrated that I know my content area and can make meaningful connections for students. The subject matter deals with meaningful issues students see or experience every day. The characters in the novel are relatable. Students will also gain a deeper understanding of religious and racial prejudices that exist in the United States. The characters in the novel deal with issues that are prevalent in today’s society, including fitting in, the norm, violence and peace. This unit provides opportunities for students to voice their own opinions, while encouraging them to look deep into their own actions and beliefs.
Communication
This unit demonstrates the use of Blooms Taxonomy, which provide various levels of questioning and discussion. Students will interpret, produce, develop and research throughout the unit. The content for this unit is developmentally appropriate and can also be modified for an older grade level.
Conceptualization
This unit demonstrates my knowledge of content and my ability to make the material relate to students in a meaningful way. This unit gives students the opportunity to learn about literacy devices, such as characterization and analysis.
