Wisconsin Model of Academic Standard #10
The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being.
Rationale:
This is a reflection on a Parent Teacher Conference I attended for my ED 215R - Reading field placement at Alverno. The conferences took place at Lincoln Elementary School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. I had the opportunity to meet parents of students I had been working with for almost 8 weeks. My cooperating teacher asked me to actively participate in the conferences by addressing what I have noticed about their child while working with them. I worked closely with 6 students over the course of the semester who had varying degrees of learning disabilities. I worked with them on Guided Reading and vocabulary reviews. By attending the Parent Teacher Conference, I was able to witness first-hand how Reading Specialists and ESL Teachers worked together for the benefit of the student. They devised a plan of action for one particular girl who visited both teachers a few times a week. They made sure the parents were involved in all the decision making for their child.
This experience provided me with a great experience to see first-hand how communities of educators can work together and involve the parents on every aspect of their child’s education and needs. I demonstrated my understanding of Wisconsin Teaching Standard 10 by fostering relationships with other specialists in a school and with the parents. I actively participated in the conferences by providing constructive feedback to parents.
Integrative Interaction
Attending conferences gave me the opportunity to work with other professionals to make decisions regarding a child’s educational needs. I actively participated in the decision-making by giving my feedback on the students’ assessments. I still had a few weeks left at my placement and had the opportunity to put into effect the changes that were made for particular students. It affected me personally, because two of the students I worked closely with now required a behavior report after each session together.
