Wisconsin Teacher Standard #2:
"The teacher understands how children learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development."
Rationale:
This Literacy Plan was created in my Literacy in Early Adolescence class at Alverno. I was asked to develop a balanced literacy plan of the learning experiences and the environment in order for optimal student literacy learning to occur. The plan consists of my own philosophy of Balanced Literacy and how it relates to educational theorists' philosophies. Also included, is the range of reading abilities and writing behaviors for students in a sixth thru eighth grade classroom. This literacy plan also includes the role of the teacher in developing an effective literacy learning environment and how to address diverse needs of students. The components of the plan include assessments, reading and writing strategies, and instructional components (balanced literacy: read aloud/write aloud; shared reading and writing; guided reading and writing; and independent practice). Lastly, my reflection regarding the concepts I fully understand and areas where I still need further development are included.
This literacy plan demonstrates my understanding of Wisconsin Teacher Standard 2 by identifying the various ranges of students in regards to reading and writing. It also shows that I understand that each student learns differently and at their own pace.
Integrative Interaction
This literacy plan demonstrates my understanding of the diverse needs of students in a classroom. The classroom environment provides opportunities for readers and writers workshops and centers where students can work independently or collaboratively.
Diagnosis
Informal and formal assessments are required for Balanced Literacy and must be done on a daily basis. Diagnosis comes into play when determining each student’s range of ability and behaviors for reading and writing. Since these abilities change at different rates for each student, it is necessary to continually diagnose students' reading and writing behaviors.
