Wisconsin Teacher Standard #:6
"The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom."
Rationale #1:
This brochure was created for my Social Studies methods class at Alverno. The purpose of this assignment was to create an interactive addition to the Milwaukee Public Museum that will improve the exhibit. We were given a grant of $15,000 for improving a display of our choosing. “A Day in the Life of a North American Indian” exhibit focuses on the following Social Studies threads: Geography, History, and Behavioral Science. This interactive exhibit will allow students to learn more about hobbies and recreational activities that North American Indians were known for. The exhibit allows students to hone their skills at archery by shooting a bow and arrow. Just like the Woodland Indians students will be able to weave their own basket. They will have the opportunity to test their skills by working with leather and beading to create a pair of moccasins. Lastly, this interactive exhibit gives students the opportunity to spend the night in a real 15-foot teepee, while listening to stories about local Indian tribes of Wisconsin.
This exhibit demonstrates Wisconsin Teaching Standard 6 because it reflects my ability to create a visually engaging brochure for students to use while visiting the exhibit. The exhibit includes photographs and paintings of North American Indians providing an opportunity for students to become engaged in numerous hands-on activities. This exhibit also demonstrates my ability to develop lessons using multiple modes of communication. Students have the opportunity to work together learning about each hobby and recreational activity. This exhibit also demonstrates my ability to create an opportunity for social interaction while learning about subject matter.
Diagnosis
This exhibit demonstrates Diagnosis because I had to determine improving an already existing exhibit that is not only age-appropriate, but incorporates various Social Studies threads to create an engaging opportunity for students.

Rationale #2:
This lesson was created and implemented in my Middle School Teaching field placement at Alverno. Students in this classroom were in the 6th grade at Longfellow Middle School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. I created this lesson based on the fact that the class had just started their biography unit. I collaborated with my cooperating teacher on the lessons content and she provided me with the necessary handouts for making this lesson a success. For this lesson, students watched a PowerPoint presentation I created about two classical composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendolssohn. We then listened to famous pieces of their music on the internet. Each piece of music was demonstrated by laser lights, so students were able to see the difference in pitches and sounds. Students then chose one of the composers to research more in-depth. Students wrote a letter to the composer they did not select telling them about their life as a classical composer. Students read their letters to their partners aloud. This lesson gave students the opportunity to learn about two famous classical composers, using multiple modes of communication: PowerPoint, Internet, Writing, and Speaking.
This lesson demonstrates my understanding of the Wisconsin Teaching Standard 6 by using multiple modes of communication that provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate active inquiry and supportive interaction in the classroom. Students work with a partner in order to complete this assignment. Active inquiry is demonstrated by having students conduct additional research on their specific composer.
Communication
This lesson demonstrates my ability to incorporate multiple modes of communication: PowerPoint, verbal and non verbal, as well as use of the internet for research and inquiry. Communication was used to provide an engaging lesson that reinforced learning about biographies.
Integrative Interaction
My self-assessment and CT feedback demonstrates my ability to make professional decisions in the right situation. I ran into technology problems with this lesson and had to modify it at the last minute. First, the computer lab was not available on the day of the lesson, so students could not research their composers during class time; instead they had to do the research on their own time. Secondly, due to technology problems, I was unable to use my hyperlinks from the PowerPoint during the lesson. I had to find each composers website while students waited. The system was very slow and this caused some students to become impatient. I was able to get students back on task and overcome my technology problems. This lesson demonstrates my ability to adapt to the changing needs of the environment in order to engage students.
